The name of Jesus holds power:

John 14

12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. 13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

  • We must believe in the power of Jesus- “bring an umbrella”
  • Healing took place in the name of Jesus
    • Acts 3:6 Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.
  • Serves as an intercessor- “namedropping” “guest list”
  • Key is asking in Jesus name AND seeking to glorify the Father
  • Praying in Jesus name expresses alignment of our desires with God

The name of Jesus renders the devil powerless:

Luke 10

17 And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name. 18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. 19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. 20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.

  • Jesus is sending out more disciples- gives them many directions
  • They were amazed at the thing they were able to do in Jesus Name
  • vs 18- signifies the swift and visible judgment of Satan, and the authority given to his disciples to overcome evil.
  • Vs 20 gives a caution and a reminder that Jesus holds the power and that the bigger goal is bringing the message of salvation to others

The name of Jesus brings Salvation:

Acts 4

7 And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power, or by what name, have ye done this?

  • Trying to determine what power they have to be preaching such things
  • Religious elders trying to intimidate Peter and John
    • They had already tried to do the same to Jesus

8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel, 9 If we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole; 10 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. 11 This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.

  • Peter is filled with the Holy Spirit when he responds
  • Serving as a testimony for all present
  • vs. 11- shows that Peter doesn’t feel intimidated at all by them

12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

  • This is a key from this section
  • The name of Jesus is the ONLY name by which men must be saved
  • Similar to John 14:6- “I am the way the truth and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Reflections

  • The name of Jesus holds power
    • We can do all things through Christ, but nothing apart from him. Our “name” is not worth anything and by itself is powerless.
  • The name of Jesus renders the devil powerless
    • We don’t have to fear evil. Jesus has already defeated evil and death. The name of Jesus makes the devil flee.
  • The name of Jesus brings salvation
    • Good works, religious rituals, and our own “name” won’t save us. Jesus is the only name on earth powerful enough to save us.
